About
Background

Cameras lured me away from my paints and sketchbooks around age 16. Living beings, humanity, adventure and religious ceremony compete continually for my attention. My journeys direct my photographic style evident in a range that reaches across a spectrum from fine art to documentary themes. My grandparents’ family photographs from around WWI, early 20th century pictorialists and colonial African prints entrance me. My career in photography launched at University in the early 1990s where I learned the rigorous discipline of printing by demanding professors. My craft has taken me across the globe for environmental and cultural documentary projects. I am working mainly in digital formats in recent years as an environmental documentarian, portraitist, and fine artist.

Vision and Artistic Philosophy

Photography for me starts with relationship, respect and sensitivity to the sacred. My cultural images reflect years of cultivation of relationships with people and communities where I have lived and served around the world. In an era where photography has become as convenient as seeing itself, I seek the opposite act of merely "taking" pictures. Rather, I prefer to foster friendships and make images that reflect welcome presence, intimacy and collaboration.
